WHAT IS PHISHING AND PHARMING
|
| PHISHING |
| Phishing attacks use social and technical engineering to steal consumers' personal identity data and financial account credentials. Social engineering schemes use "spoofed" e-mails to lead consumers to counterfeit web sites designed to trick recipients into divulging financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames, passwords, and social security numbers. |
| By hijacking brand names of banks, e-retailers, and credit card companies, phishers often convince recipients to respond. Technical engineering schemes plant crimeware onto PCs to steal credentials directly, often using Trojan keylogger spyware. |
PHARMING |
This type of crimeware misdirects users to fraudulent sites or proxy servers, typically through a domain name server (DNS) hijacking or poisoning. The victim unknowingly discloses information believing they are at the legitimate site. |
Make note of the addresses for the web sites you visit. If you are asked to disclose information via e-mail, etc., please contact the site owner first and verify the legitimacy. |
